I have a review of [info]mkhobson's The Native Star up at Favorite Thing Ever, and in concert with the author we are running a contest for a signed copy of book.

Woot! Win a copy of The Native Star!

Because I am enchanted with my own writing, I must mention that my review contains the phrases "melt underwear across the nation" and "a ravening, manifest destiny-powered thrust to the 20th Century."

But this isn't about me. It's about a SUPERB book. Go win one! Yay!

Cure for sore mouse arm: Great big mouse. Get the biggest mouse you can find -- the kind you can rest your whole palm on. And if you use the mouse wheel a lot, get the kind that's rubbery and resistant, not the kind you just flick and flick. It works. I swear it.

(Not sore any more, wheee!)

Google Street View can have me any time it wants

On Friday I discovered the Google Street View now covers nearly all the roads in the UK -- including back country lanes, remote sheep grazing countryside, and obscure little pieces of heaven.

Now, I am never, ever going to visit the Inn at Whitewell, Lancashire. But it doesn't matter, because I've already been there in Googlevision. Been there, and been up and down the local roads too! And just like these people, I can enjoy the view down Monsal Dale from Monsal Head.

360 degree panoramic, scrolling view of nearly everywhere, including the middle of nowhere. I can practially smell the air.

Polar Bear

On my commute this morning I ran into a polar bear:

Polar bear on Georgia and Granville, Vancouver

Polar bear on Georgia and Granville, Vancouver

It was quite an effective costume -- mostly mesh and transparent if you looked close enough, but the lightness of it lent a liquid quality to the movement which made it seem very bear-like. Every time I see a bear in the wild, I'm struck by the fluidity of its gait. Plus, because the people inside could see out the shoulders and sides, the head and neck could be bearishly low.

The team was soliciting support for Save Winter, a climate change initiative.
